At the Security Event 2025 in Birmingham, CIE-Group caught up with Lewis Boughtwood from VOLO to discuss the latest advancements in their cloud-based access control platform. Among the key updates is the introduction of multi-factor authentication (MFA), reinforcing the company’s focus on security and compliance in modern access control systems.
Multi-factor authentication is already widely used in sectors such as banking, finance and online services. VOLO Cloud Access is now applying the same approach to property access control. By adding Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), VOLO ensures that user accounts have an extra layer of protection when accessing sensitive systems.
Lewis Boughtwood of VOLO explained that MFA is becoming a standard across security platforms and VOLO's implementation will be designed to keep users secure without introducing unnecessary complexity.
You’ll see MFA used with your bank or email logins. Now we’re bringing that same standard of protection into Volo’s cloud access control platform.
Security threats continue to evolve, especially in cloud environments. To be introduced later this year, VOLO's Multi-Factor Authentication will help to reduce the risk of unauthorised access and support compliance for industries that demand higher standards of protection.
This update is particularly important for:
Users will be able now protect their access control portal with a secondary verification method, helping prevent security breaches even if a password is compromised.
One of the key advantages of VOLO’s cloud-first approach is the seamless delivery of updates. There is no need for installers or administrators to apply patches or download firmware. Security updates, like MFA, are pushed automatically.
The beauty of a cloud-based system is any updates are there for you straight away. There is nothing for you to do. You just benefit from the improvements and refinements.
This provides peace of mind for site managers and reduces the need for hands-on technical support.
For new VOLO systems, MFA will be available by default. For existing sites, VOLO will send communications ahead of the rollout, explaining how to activate the new features. The rollout process is designed to be clear and manageable.
If you already manage a VOLO Cloud Access system, you will be notified of any changes and guided through the setup process. For most users, the transition will be automatic and require little to no intervention.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires users to provide two or more forms of identity verification when logging into a system. This enhances account security and helps prevent unauthorised access.
MFA will be strongly recommended for all administrator and user accounts. In high-security settings, it may be required by default.
Updates are applied automatically through the cloud. Some users may receive a notification to enable MFA manually, depending on their role and account level.
No. Volo’s cloud-based infrastructure ensures updates are applied in the background, keeping your system secure and up to date.
Volo will send rollout instructions tailored to each site. You will have enough time to manage the transition smoothly across all systems.
