VOLO Unveils 4G Access Controller with 2G Safety Net

28th March 2025

VOLO has unveiled the latest upgrade to its Cloud Access Controllers, integrating a 4G modem with 2G rollback functionality. This ensures seamless connectivity even in remote locations. Founder Dean Kernot shares insights on why this update is a game-changer for reliability.

VOLO, a leader in cloud-based access control solutions, has introduced a major upgrade to its Cloud Access Controllers. The latest update brings a new 4G modem with an essential 2G rollback functionality, ensuring unparalleled connectivity even in the most challenging environments.

VOLO Founder Dean Kernot recently discussed this significant advancement in a video interview with CIE's Chris Edwards, shedding light on why this upgrade is critical for the industry...

What is VOLO Cloud-Based Access Control?

VOLO’s cloud-based access control system is designed to provide secure, remote access management for businesses and facilities. Unlike traditional on-premise solutions, VOLO operates over the cloud, reducing the need for extensive infrastructure and making it easier to manage access from anywhere. Its SIM-based connectivity allows it to function even in remote locations where traditional internet connections may not be reliable.

The move to 4G – a natural progression

Dean Kernot VOLO Cloud Access ControlWith mobile communication technology advancing rapidly, the move to 4G was an expected and necessary step for VOLO. Dean Kernot explained, “The 4G modem was something we've got along with everybody else… we’ve gone along with where the industry standard is expecting our competition to have gone to 4G.”

This upgrade ensures that VOLO remains at the forefront of industry expectations, delivering faster and more reliable connectivity.

However, Dean was quick to clarify that VOLO’s data requirements are different from typical mobile applications. Unlike streaming services or high-data applications, VOLO’s cloud-based access controllers handle small packets of data. “It needs just a 2G connection because of the data packet size we're moving. We're not moving video. We're not moving audio - just small bytes of data.”

Why keep 2G rollback?

“We are seeing some areas that are still patchy on 4G. And it was really important for us that we kept continuity and connection because we pride ourselves on the uptime of VOLO.”

Despite the 4G upgrade, VOLO has retained 2G rollback functionality, a decision Dean describes as essential for ensuring consistent connectivity; “We are seeing some areas that are still patchy on 4G. And it was really important for us that we kept continuity and connection because we pride ourselves on the uptime of VOLO.”

Since VOLO access controllers are often installed in remote or hard-to-reach locations, connectivity can be a challenge. The new modem enables automatic rollback to 2G when 4G coverage is insufficient, ensuring that systems remain online at all times. “Just the makeup of the product suits it to be in difficult-to-reach areas. So invariably, that’s where communications are at their worst.”

This dual-network approach guarantees seamless operation, reinforcing VOLO’s reputation for reliability. Dean reassures customers that while 2G will eventually be phased out, the current setup maximizes performance today. “We know at some point in the future… the 2G signal will be removed. That’s fine. Everything will be 4G or the next version going forward. But today, we've got that 4G with that 2G to ensure the best connectivity, no matter where you put VOLO.”
