There are tired legs and high spirits all round at CIE Group, as members of staff settle back into work following the completion of their latest charity cycle ride. Riding under the ‘HDBaseTeam’ banner seven of the CIE-Group staff completed an epic and gruelling 550 mile ride through the scenic French countryside between St Malo and Bordeaux. Timed to coincide with the company’s 50th year in business, the ride raised over £4000 for local children’s charity Derby Kids’ Camp as well as Cancer Research and British Heart Foundation. The ride brings the total funds the company has generated through their cycling exploits up to almost £15,000.
Embarking on their journey on Thursday 25th September at 0800hrs, the team took three days to cycle the 550 mile route from St Malo to Bordeaux. On day one they cycled 175 miles from St Malo to La Baule travelling through the undulating Brittany countryside of green hills and granite houses.
“This all sounds wonderful, but experience of our previous challenges us that ‘undulations’ is a bit of French understatement,” commented Chris Edwards, CIE-Group’s Marketing Director. “That said after a hard day in the saddle we were fortunate to finish the day on the Atlantic coast at our first night’s stop near La Baule. We then soaked our weary legs before a well-earned supper ready to fuel us ready for day two’s mere 190 miles!”
On the second day the team cycled from La Baule to Cognac. For many it was a gruelling 12 hours in the saddle, but morale was good and the group worked together to keep spirits high. The team followed the coastal road south past La Rochelle before heading inland, toward Rochefort and Saintes and onto the Charente River. With the encouragement from team captain and Group Sales Director, Steve Collin, the riders all made it successfully to Cognac before sunset.
On the third day they group cycled through the vineyards of the Dordogne Valley passing Bergerac and St Emilion on the way. The team arrived in Chateau Lafitte, just on the outskirts of Bordeaux to be greeted by a large crowd of family, friends and colleagues. The celebrations went on long into the evening.
Steve Collin comments: “It was an incredible journey which tested even the best of our riders, but we all did it! It would not have been possible without all the support we received along the way. The list is endless, but thank you to the united support back at the office, our family, friends and of course our sponsor CYP.”
